AN ANNIVERSARY, summer ROSÉS and MRS R’S first PRICELINE PUBLIC appearance

If you’ve been reading us for a while and you get our weekly emails I send out, you’ll probably already know it was our anniversary recently. We tend to go a little bit crazy around this time of year – maybe because this is around the time we first met, which was a pretty crazy time in itself.

Here’s our story of how we met by the way.

For that reason – and possibly because we love the hospitality scene anyway – the week after the 15th September (the date we met) always tends to have a bit of a booze focus.

That said, we’ve also been so busy recently, fitting life around our cocktails has been a little challenging this week. especially with Mrs romance being one of the experts of Priceline’s charm school and having her first public appearance for them, it’s been hard to find enough time to celebrate… don’t worry though, we did find a way.

We hope you delight in this (rather boozy) IG edition and we’ll chat again soon.

Jim & Christina x

So this week, we’re celebrating our 17th year together! Isn’t that amazing? We were so young when we first met – when the opening ceremony of the Sydney Olympics was on!

And because we didn’t know how long we’d had together – Mrs romance delighted in labelling me ‘an itinerant’ because I was a backpacker at the time – we celebrated being together at every opportunity.

But this long on, I think we can safely put to bed any ideas that this is a short-term relationship! Here’s to the next 17 years with the most incredible woman on earth.

Hope you like our photo by the way. It’s the stunning work of Kris Ashpole. check out her portfolio.

To celebrate, we’ve come to Wilhelmina’s in Balmain. This amazing bar (which is sister to another preferred of ours – the Wild Rover) hosts regular events that are always worth going to.But tonight’s event is the absolute pinnacle: whisky and chocolate pairings!

First, however, we’re being sensible and lining our stomachs… with wine!

The set menus they have prior to their events at Wilhelmina’s are very smart. You choose 2 entrées and a main to share per couple – and a glass of red wine of course. We’ve gone for the polenta nuggets with chilli jam and paramasan, and the pork-stuffed Yorkshire puddings with goat cheese to start (we’ve chosen wisely), and we’re sat up at the bar.

If you’re ever provided a bar seat at a restaurant instead of a regular table, always take it. You get to see what happens and you typically get even better service. It’s a preferred suggestion of ours.

The main is a char-grilled flank steak with charred bullhorn peppers and a buttermilk and horseradish puree. now I’m really ready for whisky and dessert!

Here are 5 of the 6 whiskies we’ll be sampling and learning about tonight – the only one missing is the Laphroaig Quarter Cask. and below them the stunning chocolates that have been so thoroughly paired with each dram.

Taking us through each whisky is the hugely well-informed Michael Nouri – a booze brand ambassador and –to look at – quite possibly the Jesus of whisky.

The chocolates, by the way, are from a local Belgian chocolatiers Belle Fleur fine Chocolates in Balmain. They’re so delicious it’s all I can do to keep my hands off them before the class begins!

We start with the Japanese Hakushu Distiller’s Reserve paired with a tea chocolate, the Connemara Irish whiskey with an espresso dark choc and the Canadian Club 8 year-old whisky, which works well with a wattle seed chocolate. I’ve never tried Connemara before, which is a shame. It’s now a solid favourite.

The second round starts with the makers mark 46 bourbon and its Riverina orange chocolate. It’s a very special whiskey and one I really enjoy. The Auchentoshan three wood Scotch single malt is outstanding but is still a bit clean for me. The PNG dark chocolate, which is the gold cacao shaped choc you can see, is so full on. about 1000% cacoa!

Finally, the Laphroaig Quarter Cask finishes the playlist with a bombshell, and a popcorn and peanut dark chocolate. This has the smoky, peaty oomph I love about Islay scotch.

Unfortunately, Mrs romance hasn’t had such a terrific night; she’s not a whisky fan. It was her idea to book this evening though. Isn’t she a beautiful human?

Mrs romance and I are pretty big fans of coffee. I can’t go a day without one. It implies I lean pretty heavily on our Nespresso machine, the poor thing.

For other Nespresso folk out there, I’m a fan of the purple capsules – the Arpeggio – and I’m typically a little sceptical when Nespresso bring out a new limited edition range.

My scepticism was ill founded with their newest range though. These three make up the Barista Range, and they’re actually bloody awesome. The only downside is that they’re limited editions, which implies they’ll eventually disappear.

There are three different intensities and flavours in this range, and they’re all quite Italian in name and in profile: the Chiara – implying ‘clear’, the Scuro, which translates as ‘dark’, and the Corto, Italian for ‘short’.

I love that these three work better in different styles of coffee. For example, the Chiara is terrific as a flat white or cappuccino and the Corto is incredible as an espresso or macchiato. They’re interchangeable of course, but I think that’s how they ought to be enjoyed.

The crema on the coffee you can see by the way is just from the coffee. No milk added.

The ballot papers are starting to appear in people’s letterboxes now, and Mrs romance and I are starting to feel a bit nervous. I hope there’s nothing in it, but the skywriting over Sydney doesn’t make us feel very good. I’ve taken the opportunity in post-production editing of this photo to change the message to what I want it to say of course.

A really close pal of mine told me recently that he’s voting no for marriage equality, which just brings up yet another problem with this dumb plebiscite. It unnecessarily makes people – pals – butt heads over issues that don’t need to be brought up. If this government – unlike so numerous others around the world – had had the courage to make such a easy change that affects absolutely no one else other than the people wanting to get married, so much money, time and friendships would have been spared.

It was such a pretty sky before this happened, too.

Tonight, continuing our celebrations of our anniversary, Mrs romance and I have cracked one of those special bottles of red wine we’ve been saving for a long time.

Skimstone Winery in Mudgee, NSW is an incredible little place. spectacular surroundings and amazing wine, and all sold from a cellar door they built themselves.

The men from Skimstone contacted me after we shared this photo on Instagram and told us the 2012 vintage of their Sangiovese no longer exists, which has made us very sad, but it also implies we’ve now got a good excuse to get back to Mudgee and delight in some time in what we believe is the world’s friendliest place.

Check out our stories from our time in Mudgee here.

Tonight, Mrs romance is taking her mum out for a show. They’re going to see the musical stunning about the life and times of prolific singer-song-writer Carole King. Here’s what Mrs R has to say about it:

”Carole King one of the most successful female artists of all time. Her album ‘Tapestry’ was in the charts for 6 years and her record was only beaten by Madonna in the ‘90s.

“You may not initially know her name, but her songs have been covered by over 1000 artists including Adele, Amy Winehouse, Kylie and more.

”The musical follows her life story from age 16 to 29 and is really the story of popular music. I was impressed at the range of songs she wrote and that I knew practically every one.

”Best of all, I had a wonderful night out with my mum who adored the show too. We had Gelato Messina after and couldn’t stop talking about the show.

”Definitely recommend this show for music fans of all ages.”

The show runs until 23rd December 2017 at the Lyric Theatre in Pyrmont, Sydney. Don’t miss it!

After a hot weekend here in Sydney, it really feels like we’re coming into summer proper. As you can see, we’re all set and ready for it too!

There’s nothing better than a glass or two of rosé on a hot day. ever because we went to Provence in France a couple of summers back, the home of crisp, dry, pink red wine that even the manliest of men drink, we’ve been hooked.

We’ll have a few much more suggestions for summer rosés as the temperature picks up, but these are our top picks for the time being:

The conceited Frog Ribet pink Syrah Rosé punches above its weight in price terms, has an amazing name and label and is from the region adjacent to Provence. Well worth a opt for $9.99

Shop it: conceited Frog Ribet pink Syrah Rosé

The Gerard Bertrand Côtes des Roses Rosé comes in one of the most distinctive bottles we’ve ever seen. That’s right: the bottom is in the shape of a rose! This Provençal princess is sweet yet tempered with a citrusy pop, and on the money at $19.99.

Shop it: Gerard Bertrand Côtes des Roses Rosé

Finally, if you want to celebrate the summer in style, here’s what you want: the champagne Duperrey Brut Rosé. It’s crisp and fresh but is also honeyed and fruity, and is ideal at giving that French accent to a pleased day. RRP $46.99.

Shop it: champagne Duperrey Brut Rosé

Mrs romance – in her Hair romance capacity – is off to Queensland this morning to work the crowd at the most recent Priceline Pharmacy charm school Playground in Pacific fair in the Gold Coast. Not a bad view of Sydney from up here!

Working with Mrs romance today is Bonnie Gillies from Oz charm expert and Lauren Brant as MC.

And there she is! Mrs romance rocking the stage at the Priceline Pharmacy charm school Playground. Make sure you check out the Priceline Pharmacy site for much more of Mrs R’s hair suggestions – she’s also on the most recent Priceline magazine too!

The sun’s still out and it’s knock-off time. That can only imply one thing: martini time! actually it implies a couple of things – martini time and also that spring is genuinely here. #TFFT

I’m also pleased to be giving a new gin a try out. We’ve had our eye on the Hayman’s London dry gin for a while, but we’re only now trying it. It’s even made (very) close to where I grew up in the UK. though they are in the process of moving the distillery and Marjorie the stunning copper still to east London soon.

It’s a stunning gin ideal for a martini. and their sloe gin does wonders for a negroni. check out our recipe here.

We hope you’ve delighted in this IG Edition. We’ll catch you again soon.

I believe I need to give my pal Ste a regular column on this site, because he instigated so many of our adventures!

Our Vietnam group, sadly, had just broken up. Dave and Mike flew back to England.  Sander and Jitske went on to Cambodia.  And since I had no place to be, really, I joined Ste and Darren in one of my favorite cities, Phnom Penh!

Within minutes of arriving at our guesthouse, Ste befriended the staff and found available was a party that night in the countryside an hour outside the city. It was the end of the gather and the village would be celebrating.  Would we like to come?

How could we say no to an opportunity like that?!

We piled ten of us into the back of a pickup truck and drove the long, dirty ride out to the village.

My hair did not handle the ride well.

But our truck was certainly roomier than several of the vehicles we passed on the road…

And, finest of all, Darren’s seat came with a built-in massage.

I believe he had mixed feelings about it.

After showing up in the village, we were right away invited into our friends’ home for dinner.

That’s when I realized that we weren’t just with our guesthouse staff — we were hanging out with the lakeside tuk-tuk drivers as well!

Dinner — noodle soup with some chicken — was fabulous. We weren’t sure of the rules involved, but our Khmer good friends made it easy — they asked if we could each chip in a few dollars.  Which we gladly did.

One of the many things I like about the people of Cambodia?  Their friendships are immediate and genuine.

Darren made finest good friends with Mr. Nap.  Mr. Nap toasted with Darren over and over again, stating bit more than, “Mr. Nap!  Cambodia!  Cheers!”

And the kids are SO adorable. This bit girl isn’t as wonderful and innocent as she looks…she’s quite the mischief-maker!

After dinner and strolling from house to house, all of them on stilts, we headed to a nearby field…

And found it set up for a carnival!

With carnival games that aren’t rigged.  Can you believe it?

For 4,000 riel ($1), Ste threw four darts — and popped four balloons.

What did he win?

Four beers. (This is one custom that has to make its method to America!)

The piece de resistance, however, was the Cambodian Merry-Go-Round of Death. This merry-go-round was made from sharp metal pieces covered with rust and peeling paint, and it appeared like it was going to fall apart at any second.

And the kids, predictably, were crazy about it. It was like they were at Disney World.

I could only think of the freaked-out parents if a merry-go-round such as this was in the United States.

There was no order to the madness around the merry-go-round.  I jumped on the first motorbike I could find and a Khmer teenager right away hopped on behind me.  He was so excited to ride with a farang girl!

Some things never change, no matter what part of the world you’re in.  In every single country, there will be wild boys who show off to the point of nearly killing themselves.

That’s what the boys did on the Merry-Go-Round of death — they stood on the motorbikes and swayed back and forth sideways, so when the ride sped up, the centrifugal force would lift them up at nearly a 90-degree angle!

It was harrowing to watch and even more harrowing to stand next to it.  The chains appeared like they’d fly off any minute!

There were hardly any foreigners at the celebration, making us celebrities. This bit girl, who was about six, yelled, “My friend!  MY FRIEND!” and grabbed me to go on the merry-go-round with her, then held out her arms for me to pick her up.

She was like a doll.  So tiny.

Aside from the merry-go-round, we spent the night hanging out with our new Khmer friends, learning Khmer words, drinking Angkor beer with ice cubes, and avoiding the lethal rice wine.

This was truly an incredible night — one of the very best of the trip so far. It was incredible to join the locals in a place that so few foreigners get to visit, and it was another example of the generositynull

10 ways TO MAKE YOUR Christmas birthday special

happy birthday, Mrs Romance! That’s right, it’s my stunning wife’s big day today!

Exactly one week before Christmas Day, Christina’s birthday has always meant that this time of year is even more exciting for her. even at the risk of her day being overshadowed by all the festive celebrations, Mrs R has always carried on regardless.

Mind you, I’m still surprised even now that she never really broadcasts that it’s her birthday (that’s my job!). She’s got more class than that! instead she just gets incredibly excited. It’s very endearing.

However, there are pitfalls. I’ve always made a point to never ever give her a combined birthday and Christmas gift. I’ve never suggested it, but I can think of it would really piss her off. I know I would be. If anything, I make sure her birthday present is better than her Christmas prezzie.

I’m sure she doesn’t mind if it comes from friends, but I feel I have that extra level of responsibility!

I get the impression that the two-in-one gift happens to her more typically than she likes to admit. like many other ‘Christmas babies’, Mrs R has learnt to make the most of her birthday being close to the Yuletide.

Here are her 10 top tips for making the most out of having a Christmas birthday – and ways you can help someone whose birthday’s in late December have a terrific day too.

Birthday Girl, over to you!

“It can be hard having a birthday so close to Christmas but I’ve always loved it. It’s my favourite time of year. Here’s how I make sure my birthday doesn’t get lost in the holidays.

I think these tips apply to anyone who wants to make the most of their birthday. It’s so important to be thankful for every birthday. As my mum says, it’s a gift to make it to your next birthday, so make the most of it!

Tell people it’s your birthday

No need to be pushy, but a little early warning makes it easier on your pals to remember that your birthday is coming up.

Make plans for your birthday in advance

If you want to catch up with pals and family on your actual birthday, make plans early. The holidays are peak party season and you need to get in first. also remember that restaurants and bars are busy and you will need to book in advance.

Keep your expectations in check

Remember it is peak party season so don’t take it personally if someone can’t make it to your birthday party.

Celebrate your birthday week (or month!)

This makes the whole week more fun and gives you more opportunities to catch up with your close friends. I love birthdays and the more excuses to celebrate, the better.

Create birthday rituals

Do something that makes you feel good on your birthday, or start a tradition with your pals that you do on everyone’s birthday. This will give you that birthday feeling even on Christmas Day.

Write a gift wishlist

With Christmas coming up right behind your birthday, your pals and family may need tips for what to buy you as they need two ideas instead of one. Don’t fear the “double present”. With a birthday a week before Christmas, I would typically get one present instead of two separate presents.
Friends would always ask if this was a pain but I didn’t mind. combined presents are usually bigger and better anyway. plus I’m always so excited to get a gift, no matter how small.

Always have cake

A party without cake is just a meeting. Cake makes everything more fun so make sure you have a birthday cake, even if it’s just a cupcake. put a candle in it and remember to make a substantial wish for the coming year as you blow the candle out.

Treat yourself

There are so many sales at this time of year, why not pick yourself up a special birthday treat. As I always say, if it’s 50% off you can buy twice as much!

Get photo-ready

I make it a birthday ritual to get my hair done the week before and a blowdry on my birthday so I’m sure to have a good hair day. Birthdays are when you will be photographed more than any other day so make an effort to look good and feel good so you’ll enjoy looking back on the photos each year.

Move your birthday!

Sometimes it gets too crazy at this time of year and no matter how early you start trying to organise a catch up, it’s just never going to happen. So move your birthday! pick another day and celebrate it then.
Personally I like March; January is almost as busy as December. then in February, everyone goes on a detox (as it’s the shortest month) and by the time March rolls around everyone is ready to party!”

How do you celebrate a Christmas birthday? tell us in the comments below!

And feel free to wish Mrs romance a happy birthday too!
